Partnering with CodeAI to prepare the first AI generation

OpenAI and CodeAI have announced a partnership to help students build AI literacy and develop responsible usage skills. The collaboration coincides with the launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a new experience featuring built-in protections and parental controls. Together, the organizations plan to launch educational programs, a joint advisory council, and student challenges over the next year.

OpenAI and CodeAI have announced a signature partnership aimed at helping students build AI literacy, think critically about artificial intelligence, and develop the skills to use it responsibly. The collaboration addresses a recognized gap where the vast majority of students use AI, while only 16 percent of high school leaders report that all of their students learn technical understanding in the classroom. The partnership coincides with the launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience designed with learning at the center, featuring built-in safety protections, features to promote healthy use, and additional parental controls. Over the next year, OpenAI and CodeAI will focus on practical programs to support learning and creativity. The initiatives include establishing a joint advisory council with experts in child development, youth public policy, and learning science to guide future development. Additionally, the organizations will introduce the Hour of AI to teach basics to millions of students, launch the first-ever Builders Challenge for high school students to create with AI and receive mentorship, support CodeAI's free year-long high school course AI Foundations, and run Career Journeys to connect students with OpenAI researchers and engineers. According to OpenAI Head of Child Development Dr. Allison Mishkin, the goal is to help students ask better questions, think critically about answers, and use tools responsibly. CodeAI CEO Karim Meghji emphasized providing a foundation so AI becomes something students can question, shape, and create on their own.

Why it matters

This partnership addresses growing concerns about the gap between student AI adoption and technical understanding. By embedding safety controls and educational resources into tools targeted at teens, OpenAI and CodeAI are establishing new standards for youth engagement with artificial intelligence.
