OpenAI named a Leader in enterprise coding agents by Gartner

OpenAI has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise AI Coding Agents, with its Codex platform recognized for innovation and enterprise deployment. Codex is used by over four million people weekly and major companies including Cisco, Datadog, Dell Technologies, and NVIDIA. Recent improvements to the platform include GPT-5.5, enhanced tool use, and stronger support for enterprise software development workflows.

OpenAI has been recognized as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise AI Coding Agents, driven by the capabilities and deployment scale of its Codex platform. According to OpenAI, Codex is utilized by more than four million people each week, alongside major enterprise clients such as Cisco, Datadog, Dell Technologies, and NVIDIA. Gartner evaluated Codex based on its Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision, highlighting strengths in agentic software development, enterprise governance, sandboxing, and flexible deployment options. The report noted Codex's broad developer surface, including IDE extensions, CLI, SDKs, and cloud-based orchestration, alongside enterprise controls like approval gates, role-based access control, and auditable workspace governance. OpenAI states that software development is increasingly shifting from autocomplete to delegating complex tasks to agents that can understand large codebases, use tools, run tests, and prepare work for human review. To support this momentum, OpenAI has rolled out recent updates including GPT-5.5, Codex Security, GPT-5.5-Cyber, mobile support, Remote SSH for managed environments, HIPAA-compliant use, and deployment support via partners like Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, Infosys, PwC, and TCS. Additionally, OpenAI is offering eligible enterprise accounts two months of free Codex usage for new users through June 12.
