OpenAI has announced the launch of the Data agent in ChatGPT Work, a new feature designed to help employees across businesses answer data-driven questions without writing queries or learning new analytics tools. According to OpenAI, the agent connects directly to approved company data sources such as Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, MongoDB, and others, while also incorporating files from Google Drive and SharePoint. By leveraging an organization's business terms, metric definitions, and semantic layers, the agent interprets data accurately while enforcing existing account permissions, including table, row, and column restrictions managed by enterprise administrators. Users can direct and refine the analysis through natural conversation, review the underlying evidence, and turn findings into interactive dashboards with built-in visualizations. The tool also interoperates with external platforms like Power BI, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot, and can share insights via Slack or email. OpenAI reports that nearly all of its product team and over two-thirds of its go-to-market organization already use data agents internally. Early Alpha program participants, including NTT Data, Thermo Fisher, and ServicePiston, are currently using the agent to evaluate sales, spending, and staffing decisions. Administrators can enable and configure the Data agent and its associated source plugins through ChatGPT Work workspace settings.
Now everyone can put data to work
OpenAI has introduced the Data agent in ChatGPT Work, allowing employees to connect company data, investigate changes, and build interactive dashboards using natural language. The tool integrates with major data sources and enterprise platforms while maintaining security controls managed by administrators. Organizations in an Alpha program are already using the agent to analyze sales, spending, and staffing opportunities.
Why it matters
This release expands generative AI utility into complex enterprise data analytics, enabling non-technical staff to query databases and build dashboards directly through conversational interfaces while respecting existing corporate governance and security frameworks.
