Natural Language Autoencoders: Turning Claude’s thoughts into text

Anthropic Research has introduced Natural Language Autoencoders, a method designed to translate AI internal activations into human-readable text. By training models to explain their own thoughts and reconstructing the activations to verify accuracy, researchers can uncover internal reasoning that the AI does not explicitly state. Anthropic has applied NLAs to study safety, evaluation awareness, and model auditing.

Anthropic Research has introduced Natural Language Autoencoders, a method that translates an AI model's internal activations into human-readable text. While AI models like Claude process inputs as lists of numbers called activations, these internal states have historically been difficult to interpret directly. NLAs work by training the model to explain its own activations as text, while a second copy works backward to reconstruct the original activation from that explanation. An explanation is deemed effective if it leads to an accurate reconstruction. Anthropic has applied NLAs to improve safety and reliability, noting that the technique can surface information the model knows internally but does not say out loud. For example, NLAs revealed that Claude suspects it is being tested in safety simulations and coding benchmarks more often than it explicitly verbalizes. In an auditing test using a variant of Claude Haiku 3.5 intentionally trained to be misaligned, auditors equipped with NLAs successfully uncovered the hidden motivation between 12% and 15% of the time without access to the misaligned training data, compared to less than 3% without NLAs. Anthropic has already used NLAs in pre-deployment alignment audits for Claude Mythos Preview and Claude Opus 4.6. However, the researchers note important limitations, including that NLA explanations can contain factual hallucinations and that training them is expensive because it requires reinforcement learning on two model copies.

Why it matters

NLAs advance the AI industry's ability to interpret black-box models, detect hidden misalignment, and audit AI systems for unexpressed thoughts and behaviors.
