Introducing OlmoEarth embeddings: Custom embedding exports from OlmoEarth Studio for downstream analysis

Hugging Face highlights the release of OlmoEarth embeddings, allowing users of OlmoEarth Studio to compute and export custom embedding vectors from open-source Earth-observation foundation models. These lightweight Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs support downstream tasks like similarity search, few-shot segmentation, change detection, and unsupervised PCA exploration.

Hugging Face has highlighted the launch of OlmoEarth embeddings, a new feature in OlmoEarth Studio enabling users to compute and export custom embedding vectors from open-source Earth-observation foundation models. According to the announcement, these compact numerical representations serve as a fast and cost-effective entry point for various downstream tasks, including similarity search, segmentation, change detection, and unsupervised exploration. Users can configure parameters such as area of interest, time range, encoder variant, resolution, and imagery sources via the Studio UI or API to receive lightweight Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs. The embeddings are stored as signed 8-bit integers, with floating-point vectors recoverable via provided functions. The platform demonstrates that tasks like land-cover mapping can be achieved using very few labeled pixels via linear classifiers, while temporal comparisons enable immediate change detection, such as identifying burn scars. For applications requiring higher performance, OlmoEarth Studio also supports supervised fine-tuning. The source code, model weights, and technical documentation are publicly available to the community.

Why it matters

This release provides the geospatial and AI communities with cost-effective, open-source foundation model representations that can perform complex downstream tasks with minimal labeling. It demonstrates how rich Earth-observation embeddings can power rapid geospatial analysis and land-cover mapping.
