OpenAI has introduced Intelligence Age, a new blog created by its Strategic Futures team. The team's overarching goal is to examine how free society should be restructured to preserve individual rights and agency while accommodating transformative artificial intelligence. According to the publication, the concentration of power represents the largest, most serious, and most conceptually challenging risk in the broader AI safety and policy community. Historically, the modern state has depended on human labor for political, military, and tax-based support. However, advancements in real-world autonomous systems and machine intelligence may soon allow states to project force and collect revenue from data centers without relying on cooperative human populations or labor. To prevent disempowerment and the undue concentration of power, the team argues that society must establish the right balance of power rather than seeking radical decentralization. The blog's work will be guided by several principles, including maintaining individual autonomy, holding individuals responsible for technology misuse, scoping collective action narrowly, using law to level the playing field, retaining human institutional primacy, and implementing bounded legibility for high-stakes AI actions while preserving privacy and free expression.
Introducing Intelligence Age
OpenAI has launched Intelligence Age, a new blog by its Strategic Futures team. The blog explores how transformative AI could reshape power, governance, the economy, and individual freedom. The team aims to address concentration of power risks as society accommodates emerging artificial intelligence.
Why it matters
This initiative highlights how leading AI labs are formally grappling with the long-term societal, political, and economic structural risks posed by advanced and autonomous artificial intelligence.
