OpenAI has announced the release of GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol designed to offer a new balance of capability and cost for professional work, agentic coding, and computer use. According to OpenAI, the model nearly matches the intelligence of GPT-6 Astra across several evaluations while operating at roughly one-fifth of Astra standard input and output token prices. Standard API pricing for GPT-6.1 Sol is set at $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens, and $0.10 per million cached input tokens, with the latter representing a 95% reduction from standard input pricing. In benchmark evaluations, GPT-6.1 Sol eclipses previous scores on complex software-engineering tasks, PDF document comprehension, and multi-step business workflows, often approaching Astra performance at substantially lower costs per task. It also demonstrates improved factual accuracy on difficult prompts and enhanced alignment metrics, including better transparency regarding limitations and adherence to safety constraints. GPT-6.1 Sol is available starting today via the OpenAI API under the name gpt-6.1-sol, and is accessible to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, though it is not yet available in Chat. Additionally, OpenAI plans to release GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast in the coming days, offering up to eight times faster token generation compared to standard speed in Codex.
Introducing GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgraded model that nears GPT-6 Astra intelligence for coding, computer use, and professional tasks. It is available starting today through the OpenAI API and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for various user tiers at significantly lower token prices than Astra.
Why it matters
The release of GPT-6.1 Sol demonstrates significant progress in lowering the cost of near-frontier AI capabilities for complex professional, coding, and agentic workflows. By offering performance approaching top-tier models at a fraction of the price, it expands access to advanced automation for developers and enterprises.
