How ChatGPT adoption has expanded

New data from OpenAI Signals reveals that ChatGPT adoption is expanding globally across diverse regions, languages, and demographics. Users are engaging with the platform more frequently and exploring a broader range of capabilities over time. The findings highlight rapid growth in areas such as Africa, Asia, and lower-HDI countries.

According to new OpenAI Signals data, global adoption of ChatGPT is widening and deepening as users incorporate the tool into work, learning, and daily life. OpenAI measures individual AI usage across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans to understand how adoption has evolved at a global scale. The analysis shows that as individuals use ChatGPT for longer periods, they send more messages daily and try a broader range of capabilities. Specifically, six months after signing up, users send 50% more daily messages and have doubled the number of distinct tasks tried compared to when they started. ChatGPT adoption has grown sharply across every continent since July 2023, with the fastest relative growth occurring in Africa, Asia, and lower-Human Development Index countries. Furthermore, non-English usage has expanded to represent over half of active users, with Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic as the leading non-English languages. Uzbek, Kazakh, and Burmese recorded the largest percentage increases in their share of active users since July 2023. Demographic estimates based on name-to-gender crosswalks indicate that usage by people with typically-female names has increased, now representing the majority of global usage, with distinct geographical variations in name-based usage concentrations. OpenAI Signals aims to provide researchers and policymakers with empirical data to help them understand how artificial intelligence is impacting the economy.
