OpenAI has shared early progress regarding ChatGPT for Teens, an experience automatically applied to accounts identified as under 18. According to the company, users with access have utilized learning tools for tasks such as developing ideas and checking evidence, with nearly 1.2 million teens using Learning Visualizations and over 180,000 using Study Mode in a single week. To expand these educational capabilities, OpenAI is introducing College Planner to ChatGPT for Teens. Designed for high-school students in grades 10 through 12 planning to attend a four-year college, the tool aggregates application requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial aid steps into a single plan. Additionally, OpenAI is supporting the nonprofit College Advising Corps to help advisers expand into new states and establish an AI fellowship program. To further assist with studies, OpenAI is rolling out features that allow students to capture multiple pages of notes to create combined PDFs, generate flashcards that can be saved in a library, and build interactive quizzes directly in chat. Furthermore, OpenAI is supporting Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab and its independent Student Advisory Council over the next three years. The lab will bring together approximately 22 students across two tracks to work on digital wellbeing projects and build AI chatbots, providing direct feedback on teen safety defaults, parental controls, notifications, and AI literacy.
