Disrupting AI-enabled “false front” operations

OpenAI reports disrupting two sophisticated, AI-enabled influence operations originating from Russia and Iran. According to the company, the threat actors combined AI models with traditional techniques to support false-front entities designed to launder geopolitical messaging into target audiences. The Iranian operation utilized a stable of seven fake journalist personas to pitch long-form articles and generate social media comments regarding topics like the US-Iran war. Meanwhile, the Russian operation, nicknamed Dark Clark, co-opted unwitting individuals in Latin America to run a fake think tank called the Social Research Center, using VPNs to bypass regional restrictions on OpenAI services. This Russian campaign primarily used AI to draft internal reports, create operational content, and evaluate performance, while also generating fake leaked documents and audio scripts. Open-source evidence indicated that Dark Clark's fakes provoked official denials and fact checks, penetrating mainstream media and contributing to a Category 5 rating on the IO Breakout Scale, the highest rating OpenAI has reported. The Iranian operation reached Category 4. OpenAI notes that these campaigns closely resemble complex pre-AI influence operations but used AI workflows to increase scale, efficiency, and linguistic fluency. By exposing these operations, OpenAI aims to make continued efforts harder for threat actors and assist researchers in future disruptions.
