OpenAI has reported the disruption of a Cambodia-based criminal scam operation that utilized ChatGPT to support investment, romance, gambling, and law enforcement impersonation schemes. The investigation began following a lead from peers at WhatsApp, prompting OpenAI to ban a coordinated network of accounts likely operating in or around Poipet in Banteay Meanchey province. According to OpenAI, the network opportunistically blended multiple fraud tactics, employing fake online personas, translated messaging, promotional content, and forged documents such as passports and legal notices. The scammers typically followed a pattern involving outreach, emotional trust-building or pressure, and the extraction of money through deposits, activation fees, or fines. Beyond victim-facing fraud, some users within the network generated content suggesting links to human trafficking and forced criminality in Southeast Asian scam compounds. Accounts were also used for administrative duties such as tracking employee debts, drafting internal announcements, and translating discussions regarding recruitment and discipline. While the full financial scale remains unknown, communications referenced hundreds of targets and individual losses reaching thousands of dollars. OpenAI has shared threat signals with industry partners and relevant authorities while implementing measures to prevent the actors from regaining access to its services.
