OpenAI has announced the expansion of Daybreak, a new initiative aimed at helping organizations discover, validate, and patch software vulnerabilities at machine speed. According to OpenAI, the cybersecurity bottleneck has shifted from finding flaws to patching them, as frontier AI models have dramatically accelerated vulnerability discovery. To address this, the company is introducing several key tools and programs. First, an update to the Codex Security plugin implements features to accelerate vulnerability discovery and automated patching directly within developer workflows. Since its research preview in March, Codex Security has scanned over 30 million commits across more than 30,000 codebases. Second, OpenAI is launching the full version of GPT-5.5-Cyber through a limited release to trusted defenders. The model achieved a state-of-the-art score of 85.6% on CyberGym, outperforming GPT-5.5. Furthermore, OpenAI introduced the Daybreak Cyber Partner Program and the Patch the Planet initiative, founded with Trail of Bits and in collaboration with HackerOne, researchers, and maintainers. Patch the Planet involves over 30 open-source projects—including cURL, Go, Python, Sigstore, and pyca/cryptography—designed to help move widely used open-source projects from findings to fixes. OpenAI states that these tools are intended to provide approved defenders with appropriate access, governance, and human oversight to secure infrastructure before attackers can identify and abuse flaws.
Daybreak: Tools for securing every organization in the world
OpenAI has introduced Daybreak, a suite of tools and programs designed to help organizations discover, validate, and patch software vulnerabilities at machine speed. The launch includes updates to the Codex Security plugin and the full release of GPT-5.5-Cyber for trusted defenders. Additionally, OpenAI announced the Patch the Planet initiative in collaboration with Trail of Bits to support open-source software security.
Why it matters
This release shifts the AI cybersecurity focus from merely discovering vulnerabilities to accelerating patching and remediation, addressing a major bottleneck for defenders. By democratizing access to advanced cyber tools, it aims to help organizations secure infrastructure before attackers exploit flaws.
