OpenAI is expanding its ChatGPT for Teachers program to 55 additional school systems across 20 states, bringing secure AI tools, training, and support to over 100,000 more educators and staff. With this new cohort, which includes one in five of America's 20 largest public school districts, OpenAI now works with more than 100 K-12 organizations across 30 states to provide free access and training to over 300,000 educators and staff. The tool remains free for verified U.S. K-12 educators through June 2028 and is available exclusively to administrators, faculty, and educators. Alongside the expansion, OpenAI announced a 16-state data privacy agreement framework through the Student Data Privacy Consortium to help districts evaluate ChatGPT for Teachers against student data privacy requirements without negotiating separate agreements district by district. Signed General Offers cover 15 states, including Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, with California covered by a separate agreement. According to OpenAI, data shared in the workspace is not used to train models by default, and role-based controls support FERPA requirements. Data from an OpenAI analysis showed educators used the tool for time-saving administrative tasks such as report cards, lesson planning, substitute plans, and teacher-evaluation materials. Additionally, OpenAI continues training initiatives through OpenAI Academy and the National Academy for AI Instruction with the American Federation of Teachers, including hands-on AI Skills Jams this summer in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation.

Why it matters

This expansion demonstrates how AI providers are scaling enterprise-style educational deployments by embedding data privacy frameworks directly into regional administrative structures. By targeting district-level adoption and compliance, AI companies can secure long-term institutional usage while addressing regulatory concerns.
