AI is becoming a first hire for small businesses

A new OpenAI analysis reveals that at least four million Americans used ChatGPT in March 2026 to help plan, start, run, or grow small businesses. Most users operate traditional firms like consulting practices, online stores, and restaurants rather than technology startups. For these entrepreneurs, AI serves as a flexible source of general-purpose capabilities that reduces administrative burdens.

A new analysis from OpenAI shows that at least four million people in the United States used ChatGPT during March 2026 to help plan, start, run, or grow a business. Rather than launching technology companies, most users operated traditional firms such as consulting practices, online stores, home-service businesses, beauty practices, and restaurants. For these founders, AI functions as a flexible capability source that replaces outside consultants, specialized software, or additional staff. The OpenAI report indicates that 29 percent of entrepreneurial users were prospective, focusing on branding, product development, and business validation. Meanwhile, 71 percent were active entrepreneurs whose primary tasks shifted toward marketing, copywriting, customer communication, and legal questions. Active entrepreneurs also represent a disproportionately large share of users on higher-tier paid plans, accounting for 78 percent of Plus users and 81 percent of Pro users. This suggests that demand deepens when AI is connected to real commercial activity. While generative AI cannot eliminate entrepreneurial risks, it lowers the cost of obtaining basic operational capabilities. By reducing administrative burdens, AI allows sole proprietors and small teams to handle a wider range of tasks, potentially helping modest businesses launch more quickly or survive demanding workloads without immediately adding employees.

Why it matters

Small business usage demonstrates the direct economic value of generative AI by helping lean enterprises handle multiple operational roles without hiring extra staff.
