OpenAI has detailed its ongoing commitment to advance American science through collaborations with the U.S. Department of Energy, national laboratories, and universities. As part of the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, OpenAI is supporting participating researchers with broad access, technical collaboration, and focused scientific campaigns designed to integrate frontier AI into national research infrastructure. According to the company, the initiative aims to help scientists explore more ideas and test hypotheses faster, potentially compressing decades of scientific progress into years. OpenAI has committed $4 million in Codex access for approximately 2,000 Genesis researchers at national laboratories and universities, alongside $3 million in API support for two large-scale scientific campaigns. Additionally, participating researchers can receive up to $10 million in API usage for a $2.5 million spend. Selected national laboratory researchers working on eligible biology projects will also gain access to GPT-Rosalind's specialized bioscience capabilities, while trusted leaders receive early access to selected models and cybersecurity features. These efforts expand upon OpenAI's previous work, including an AI Jam Session with nine national laboratories and the deployment of advanced reasoning models on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The two concentrated scientific campaigns focus on breakthroughs for high-temperature superconductors and creating an Atlas of the Machine-Accessible Frontier to identify problems tractable with existing data and computation. OpenAI emphasizes that realizing this opportunity requires coordinated efforts between government, laboratories, universities, and industry while keeping researchers at the center of scientific discovery.
Advancing the next era of national science
OpenAI has outlined a major commitment to advance American science by collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy and national laboratories. The initiative aims to integrate frontier artificial intelligence with national research infrastructure to accelerate scientific discovery and double research productivity.
Why it matters
This partnership establishes a model for integrating commercial frontier AI directly into national scientific infrastructure and government-backed research campaigns. It demonstrates how AI developers can secure strategic roles in public sector innovation and large-scale technical challenges.
